The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu is not the type of novel I ever expect to have sent my way. A colorful recreation combining the work of two classic authors and a skilled modern writer, we are thrown into Jorah Kai’s reimagining of Ernest Hemingway’s work with a Lovecraftian twist. What was once a dramatic commentary on the society and a walk through a European journey to Spain to watch bull sports turns into a creeping and twisted adventure into a human mentality.
To be entirely honest, this book wasn’t for me. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the work and the work. Jorah Kai’s use of both Hemingway and Lovecraft was well done, and the pacing and characters fit both authors. The additions made by Kai do not take away from either author’s lore and mythos. The characters remain Hemingway’s classic cast, with a few additions and changes to fit the added cosmic horror, and the tales of recovery and war suit the Lovecraftian additions.
If you enjoy reimagining, I will say this is a good one to pick up. I enjoyed it over all, and I am sure people who are bigger fans of these stories will enjoy it even more!
